BlitzUM contest

The first edition of the BlitzUM event will take place on:
Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 5pm, room 2500 (Pavillon Paul G. Desmarais).

How does it work, and what are the rules?
You can find all the information here!

Rules:

The idea

The concept behind the blitz competition is simple: in just one minute, you must present your project or research in an engaging way. The goal is to “sell your ideas” and leave space to curiosity and imagination – to encourage people to approach you and ask more questions.

This format is already used in international conferences as EBPS, iNav, Brain Conference, CNS, ESCOP, etc.

How to present?

Ideally the atmosphere should be fun and lively, with candidates supporting each other. Each candidate can have the support of one or multiple slides, can bring objects on the stage, and interact with the crowd. Let your imagination run free, but keep the time constraint in mind: a moderator will track your performance and stop you after 60 seconds.

Do you want to join?

The competition is open to whoever plans to present at a conference during the 2025 scolar year, as the prize is intended to support the expenses related to the attendance to a conference.

To register, please fill this form by the 7th of March: https://forms.gle/CrSy1iwDmzC7CBBg8

No abstract is needed, just a title!

Additionally, you must send a .PDF presentation by email by March 11: [email protected]

Please name the file just with your surname (e.g. “Smith”).

PDFs should be in landscape format and be composed by at least 1 page. The first page must report the name of the presenter and the title of the Blitz.

Who wins? And how much?

At the start of the event, we will provide a QR code linking to a questionnaire with the list of all presentations. Each person who is joining the event will be asked to create a chart of the best three presentations, based on which one was the most captivating. Of course, each candidate will not be allowed to vote for themselves.

We will tally the scores, create a final ranking, and announce the winners. In case of a tie, the winner will be selected based on their academic position, with preference given to early-career students (e.g., trainees over PhD students, PhD students over PhD candidates, and PhD candidates over postdocs).

The awards (intended to support the expenses related to the attendance to a conference) will consist in:
1st = 300$
2nd = 200$
3rd = 100$

The money will be sent to the winners after they will provide a certificate of attendance to a conference during the 2025 scolar year. If any winner fails to provide certification, the prize will go to the next person on the ranking (e.g., the 4th place finisher, and so on) after the presentation of a certificate of attendance to a conference as well. Conferences attended before the date of the BlitzUM, but in the scolar year 2025, will be considered valid as well.

And last but not least, pizza and beer will be provided!

That’s all folks!If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out at  [email protected]
